Lorgar and the Word Bearers: The Need to Believe

Lorgar Aurelian believed humanity needed faith, and his refusal to abandon that conviction helped transform religious devotion into one of the driving forces behind the Horus Heresy. This episode explores his upbringing on Colchis, where religion shaped his worldview long before he met the Emperor. Under Lorgar, the Word Bearers conquered worlds slowly because they also built temples and encouraged worship of the Emperor as a god. The Emperor’s rejection of that worship culminated in the humiliation of Monarchia, leaving Lorgar searching for divinity elsewhere. Listeners will learn how Erebus and Kor Phaeron helped guide that search toward the powers of Chaos and how the Legion embraced what it called the Primordial Truth. The Word Bearers then became architects of corruption rather than merely followers of Horus. In Warhammer 40,000, Lorgar’s legacy is deeply ironic: the son punished for worshipping the Emperor helped create a rebellion after which the Imperium itself eventually embraced Emperor-worship on a galactic scale.
