Canon, Retcons, Propaganda, and Unreliable Narrators
Warhammer 40,000 lore is intentionally presented through a mixture of histories, legends, propaganda, eyewitness accounts, codex perspectives, novels, campaign narratives, and changing editions. This episode explains how to approach canon without assuming every statement must fit into a single perfectly consistent historical record. Some contradictions result from retcons or evolving creative decisions outside the setting, while others reflect deliberate uncertainty inside it. Imperial records can be incomplete, censored, ideologically distorted, or simply wrong; characters may misunderstand events; and myths repeated for millennia can become inseparable from politics and religion.
